This is version 1.0 of Output Enablers' System 7.5 Update Patch. It is free, and may be distributed over the Internet and public online services. It MAY NOT be distributed by any Clock Accelerator company other than Output Enablers, although owners of kits from those companies (Newer Technologies, KS Labs, Other World Computing, Trinity Works, DVC, etc.) are allowed to use the program free of charge.
This patch was created by Evan Harsha (evan@violet.berkeley.edu) following instructions by Marc Schrier (schrier@garnet.berkeley.edu). Finishing touches, funding, and distribution are provided by the partners in Output Enablers (oe@io.com). The latest version will be available via anonymous ftp from io.com in the directory /pub/oenabler.
This patch is only for use on PowerMac 7100/66, 8100/100, and 8100/110 machines that have been up-clocked. No other machines will require this patch, and it probably should not be used on any other machines.
How does it work?
Apple's new System 7.5 Update 1.0 contains code to selectively load Operating System patches based on machine type. Machine type is determined at boot-up and is stored as a "Gestalt" value. PowerMacintosh 7100/66 machines that have been upclocked to 80 MHz report a different Gestalt value than either the standard PowerMac 7100/66 Gestalt or the 7100/80's Gestalt. Hence, the System Update 1.0 will not load on 7100/66's that have been upclocked to 80 MHz.
OE's patch to the System Update 1.0 file simply modifies certain resources for the normal 7100/66 and changes the resource ID to match the Gestalt value of the upclocked 7100/66.
Additional resources are included for PowerMac 8100/100 and 8100/110 machines that have been upclocked past 120 MHz. Without this patch 8100/100's and 8100/110's running above 120 MHz will refuse to boot with System 7.5 Update 1.0.
The patch will continue to work if you remove your clock accelerator. You should perform the patch on a copy of your System 7.5 Update file.
This patch cannot work properly while virus detection software is running. Please make sure that you have disabled any virus detectors before applying the patch.
